My top 10 tricks and tips to get my kids to eat vegetables!

I will admit-I don't always eat my vegetables! But I do try everything, so I can be an example to my kids. If they try one bite and genuinely do not like it, I do not force them to eat it. But usually once they try one bite, they will look at me in surprise and say "mom, I really like it!"
But as much as I wish, that doesn't happen all the time. My boys are quite picky, so I have a few tricks I've come across that allow my boys to eat healthy and learn to enjoy their veggies, even if it's in an unconventional way!

My top 10 tricks and tips to get my boys to eat their veggies:
10. Let them pick out a veggie at the market! This has been a great way to get my kids to eat their vegetable. I take them to the local farmers market and tell them they can pick anything they want! My oldest loves to browse the tables and see what is available that week. I think the vendors get quite the kick out of him!
9. Let them prepare the food. This is a recent trick I've utilized. If my son can help peel, chop, stir, etc the side dish then he is more willing to eat his creation!!
8. Watch me eat it! I will try every new food first and let them see that it's not so bad and scary!! This has worked with a number of vegetables!!
7. Dip! If they can dip it, they will eat it! Simple as that, it doesn't matter what they veggie or dip either!
6. Mix it up! I try to change how I serve the vegetables. One day it's raw with dip, the next day it's in soup. I want them to see a variety of ways to serve vegetables and this seems to help them enjoy different ways to cook and serve them!
5. Show and tell how the veggies will help them-we read books about the nutritious aspect of vegetables. What each one is good for and how it will help their body. They like knowing that what they eat helps them get big and strong!
4. Sing silly songs about veggies! We've learned a few songs about what vegetables do, and it's fun to sing and make up dances to them AND it is a fun way to get the message across that's not so boring!
3. Hide it! I know some people say you shouldn't hide the veggies, but I do, I won't lie! I'm a big fan of pureeing fresh veggies and putting them in sauces or even brownies! BUT they see me do it, and my oldest has even asked if we can bring the carrot and spinach brownies to his school for his snack day!
2. Use their age-this is one my mother in law told me that helped her kids eat their veggies. If you are serving beans, eat 4 beans for being 4 years old.
1. Just ask them! This is the easiest  and most simple way for me. I will just them to try them. Like I said before, I don't pressure or threaten them into eating them. I don't want them to have food issues. But I find if I'm just honest and relaxed with my approach, they are willing to give veggies a chance!

I grew up with food issues and I'm proud to say I have overcome my battles. I want my boys to be happy and healthy, and to learn to enjoy food in the way it's meant to be enjoyed. So far, I think we're doing okay!

My son's style!

When it comes to ones sense of style, I think it makes more of a statement when you choose your own style and dress how you like. I try not to pressure my son with a certain style, although when he was a baby I certainly dressed him how I liked :D But now that he is getting older, he has the freedom to choose what he wants to wear and gets excited to choose his own outfits for the day.

My son Cooper is 4.5 years old going on 40! He's always been a bright and intelligent boy, but very stubborn. He knows what he wants and will stop at nothing to get it! He is this way about everything, including his clothing. He has a very laid back sense of style, but he has to look good. How does a 4 year old boy know what matches? I dont' know!! But he has always been very particular about what he wears and how it fits. When he was a toddler, he would cry and cry if his socks were crooked, or if his pants were rolled up!! Now that he is school aged, he is more aware of what other people look like and how they dress. On his first day of preschool, he told me that one of the "big" kids at school told him he had really cool shoes! Ever since then he as always wanted to buy this same style of shoes (converse) because it made him feel like he was older. Now, I don't push him to dress a certain way to "fit in". If he wants to wear his super hero cape to school, or wear a stained play shirt, or wear my headband, I don't stop him. Some might, but I like that he is learning to express himself in his style. If it makes him happy, and it's not hurting him, then I'm comfortable with his taste. Now if he wanted to go to school naked, I will put my foot down :D

I think that it's a parents job to let their children's creativity shine and thrive. And I think someones sense of style IS artistic and creative. It shows the world who you in a way, how you choose to express yourself should be individual. And while it's scary to see my son make these "grown up" decisions, I'm proud of him for standing a little outside of the box and for being himself!

Hairmax giveaway!

I have an awesome giveaway for you!! Introducing Hairmax!! Check out their line of  products below, one lucky reader will win everything!!

The developers of HairMax at home hair care product line know a thing or two about providing hair with more luster, shine and manageability than many of the products available on the market.  The sulfate free hair care products gently cleanse and condition the hair without stripping essential oils. Natural botanicals add shine and manageability to make your hair look fuller, thicker and healthier. HairMax utilizes phytic acid, a natural anti-oxidant to lower the pH and dissolve the build-up of oxidative stress layers on the scalp.

HAIRMAX ENHANCING SHAMPOO -
Using their vast experience of over 20 years of research and clinical investigation, HairMax has developed a new approach to hair care. The process starts with a sulfate free base to gently cleanse the hair without stripping essential oils. Other shampoos contain sodium laurel sulfate (SLS), a harsh detergent that strips the natural oils from the hair follicle.  SLS causes the oil glands to over-react creating too much oil. This excess oil converts to a waxy substance that builds up on the hair shaft and may restrict proper hair growth. HairMax Enhancing Shampoo is sulfate free and does not contain harsh chemicals like SLS. It gently cleanses the hair while combining with the hair’s own natural oils to lubricate and moisturize the hair shaft.

HairMax uses phytic acid in its shampoo system to lower the pH and promote a regenerative action on the base of the scalp, reducing oxidative stress layers. The shampoo system can be used by itself or in conjunction with the HairMax LaserComb. The HairMax shampoo system has a lower pH than most shampoo systems on the market. The company’s research indicates that the oils (sebum) produced in the hair follicle can turn into a waxy substance in higher alkaline environments. This lower pH, phytic acid based shampoo system helps to prevent the sebum build up and promotes the lubrication of the hair follicle to encourage healthier looking hair.

REVITALIZING CONDITIONER - Most conditioners are thick and heavy, weighing down the hair making it look flat and difficult to style. HairMax Revitalizing Conditioner utilizes innovative botanicals that deeply moisturize the hair shaft then rinse free, leaving the hair soft and manageable without heavy build up. The HairMax Conditioner restores and protects the hair shaft while a combination of botanicals and vitamins rejuvenate your hair's look and feel, leaving your hair smooth and shiny.

INVIGORATING SCALP TREATMENT - Healthy hair comes from a healthy scalp. Perspiration, oils, environmental pollution and styling products can build up on the scalp clogging the hair follicle, leaving particle deposits that can clog hair follicles and leave hair looking flat and greasy. Invigorating Scalp Treatment is designed to dissolve these particles, washing them away, making your hair look healthy, clean and full of body. The Invigorating Scalp Treatment contains phytic acid to help reduce the pH of the scalp. When used in conjunction with the Hairmax LaserComb, this facilitates laser absorption from the HairMax into the scalp.

HAIR FORTIFIER - Many of us take vitamins to maintain the health of our body. Well our scalp isn’t any different. HairMax Hair and Scalp Fortifier are vitamins for your hair. This product is infused with a special combination of botanical nutrients, DHT blockers and innovative ingredients, like caffeine, oleanolic acid and biotinoyl tripeptide, that are believed to have positive results for healthier looking hair. HairMax Hair and Scalp Fortifying mist is delivered directly to the root of the hair, maximizing the benefits these innovative ingredients may provide.

The Stocked Kitchen-Cookbook Review and Giveaway

(ETA: GIVEAWAY is now added!)

Have you ever wished that someone else would do the meal planning for you? Have you ever wished someone would prepare your grocery list? Have you ever wanted a stocked pantry without all the hassle of making sure you have a use for every single thing??
Well your wish is my command :D
This is a cookbook that will change your life. I'm serious! Written by Sarah Kallio and Stacey Krastins, this amazing book has tear out grocery lists in the back of the book so you dont' have to do a thing! The Stocked Kitchen has an easy to follow ingredient index so you can just look up the item you have on hand and find a great recipe! One grocery list makes 300 recipes!! I've made two trips using this list, and I have to say that I've saved money-I used to make weekly "big" trips to the grocery store, plus another trip or two because I forgot something. Using The Stocked Kitchen list, I've cut my trips down to twice a month! And I haven't had to run to the store to get something I've forgotten because everything I need is on the list. There is nothing strange or hard to find on these prepared lists, and everything is separated in subcategories like "frozen" "spices" "produce" "baking" and more! It's very easy to follow.
Now on top of the awesome prepared grocery list, the recipes are amazing!! Just this past week I've made their Cheesy Chicken Chili, and it was so yummy! Even the kids enjoyed it, and usually my boys see beans and they run!

I also made their Eggs Benedict recipe-I've went my whole life without ever eating Eggs Benedict but that will no longer be the case because it is so easy and so delicious!
This was a fun meal to make

I really love this cookbook,I cannot say enough good things about it. It's perfect for both a stay at home mom  like myself or the busy man or woman on the go! It's a great resource for everyone who enjoys cooking!

Yard Sale confession:

I love shopping at yard/garage sales. I think it's fun, not only to shop, but you get to see a bit into the lives of other people. It's kind of like "people watching" on the go. And I'm guilty of people watching-at the mall, park, anywhere. I'm easily amused :D
So that said, while I like shopping at yard sales, I do not like having one of my own.
And that is exactly what I am doing this weekend.
My husband was away for work so I set it up all by myself. He came home and built me some tables and a rack to hang up clothes, and we got ready to go. Of course it's over 90 degrees today and humid. People are avoiding my house like the plague. Which is odd because I live on a busy street in town.
My oldest is giving his best salesman pitch for each toy and shirt people look at though, he sure is trying hard. I love that kid.
But it's hot. My baby wants to run away. I'm hungry- But I fear if I go inside, someone will actually come.
And a cardinal pooped on my money box.
Remind me of this when I want to do this again next year.

10 Reasons why *I* want to go to Virginia Beach!

My family (my husband and my kids) have never been on a vacation together. I didn't go on any vacations growing up, it just wasn't something we could afford (but it never bothered me!). It wasn't until I got married to a man who came from a family who took many vacations did I get to experience that fun and excitement of going to a new place!
I've always wanted to go to the east coast. There is so much to offer, and there are many educational experiences on the east coast that I want my boys to know about as well. One place that I think would be amazing to visit is Virginia Beach! But why?? Check it out!

My top 10 reasons to go to Virginia Beach:
10. Hello?!?! It's the beach!! Sun, sand, and surf-YES please!
9. There is something about going to a popular vacation spot that appeals to me-I want to know what all the fuss is about!
8. I have friends there! I have some friends who I actually met online that I'm dying to meet that live there!
7. I have family there too :D
6. The fishing. I have never fished on the ocean, and we are avid fishermen in this family and that would be so much fun to do!
5. I would LOVE to see the Neptune Statue!!
4. I think the Nauticus Science and Technology and Science Center would be awesome, I know that my boys would love it...well, I might love it a little more!
3. Relaxation! I know I don't have to go to VB to relax, but I think any time you can just relax and not worry about the laundry or bills for a week is a good thing!
2. Getting to watch my kids experience the ocean and to splash on the beach-that's more than enough reason for me!
1.The memories that a vacation to Virginia Beach would be priceless and very much worth the trip. I cherish each moment with my family, and a beach vacation would be one I wouldn't forget!

I hope some day to get to check this off of my to do list in life. I want my family to experience something memorable-something that my boys will look back upon and want to take their kids so they can enjoy it as much as they did. Until then, I will dream of the sun and the fun of Virginia Beach! Maybe I'll see you there :D

I've got the sewing bug!

I've had a sewing machine for years-close to 7. I got my first one when I was 19 and started working in the fabric department of a chain store while in college. I did a little sewing here and there, but mostly it was a dust collector! I decided to bust out my machine and see if I could make my boys a quilt. I printed off some free patterns from Michael Miller Fabrics and bought some material and got to work!
Obviously, I'm not very skilled, but I think my creations so far have turned out okay!
Here are the quilt tops I made for the boys:

And here is a matching pillow I made for Cooper, I will be making one for Bennett as soon as I finish backing his quilt!

What do you think?? They are OBSESSED with dinosaurs so that is the theme I went with.
Anyone have a favorite sewing site they'd like to share?? Do you sew? Let me know, I'd love to see your creations! Maybe I can start a weekly feature? I've seen many blogs do that, I think it's so fun to see what others are coming up with!

Ricki and Abby follow their landmark documentary, The Business of Being Born, with an all-new, four part DVD series that continues their provocative and entertaining exploration of the modern maternity care system.  More Business of Being Born, available on October 18, 2011, offers a practical look at birthing options as well as poignant celebrity birth stories from stars including Alanis Morissette, Gisele Bundchen, Christy Turlington-Burns, Cindy Crawford, Molly Ringwald, Ali Larter, Kimberly Williams-Paisley and Melissa Joan Hart.

Ricki and Abby Epstein are proud to announce that they are using Kickstarter, the world’s largest crowd-based fundraising platform, to raise money for the completion and marketing of this upcoming, self-released documentary.

"Every dollar raised through this Kickstarter campaign will help us pay for the release of the film,” said filmmaker Abby Epstein.  “More important, however, is that all of the money contributed to the campaign helps spread the word about the various options expectant women have when planning their births.”  Simply, by pre-ordering your DVDs, you can be part of the movement." (courtesy of Breaking News PR)

Rikki and Abby have until JULY 14th to raise $100,000 to get this project completed!! They are only a little over halfway to their goal, and they need our help!
